Despite President Tinubu's warning, Nigerien soldiers ultimately declare a coup
Despite Bola Tinubu, the head of the Economic Community of West African States, issuing a warning on Wednesday, the Nigerien army deposed President Mohamed Bazoum on Thursday morning.
Since the soldiers' initial attempt at a coup in the early hours of Wednesday, President Bazoum has been detained.
According to intelligence obtained , the soldiers made the official announcement of the coup in a broadcast on television early on Thursday.
The National Council of the State Guard of the Nation resolved to "put an end to the regime you are familiar with," reported roughly ten senior commanders, instructed by Colonel Major Amadou Abdramane, during the broadcast.
They stated that the change came as a result of poor social and economic management by the government, as well as a deteriorating security situation in Niger.
"We reaffirm our support to all obligations undertaken by Niger," the soldiers added.
